Care Instructions

Natural fiber futons can occasionally develop lumps or uneven areas, often when new or sleeping in one area without rotation. This is due to the natural properties of cotton & wool batting. Never fear, with proper care these risks can be mitigated.

Breaking in your mattress

In the first several weeks you may notice the development of a body signature in the surface of your mattress. This is a normal occurrence and indicates the cotton layers are conforming to the contours of your body. Generally our all fiber futons will compress and get firmer with time. To ensure your mattress wears evenly and remains comfortable, we recommend taking the time to break it in by rotating and flipping regularly.

For the first couple of weeks, flip and rotate the mattress every other night or so. After that, continue rotating it once a week for about a month. Once this period has passed, you're broken in! To maintain even usage and distribution, rotate the mattress periodically from here. Mattresses that have not been broken in generally develop dips and sags where the fibers compress

Important

Because we use only natural fibers, we recommend keeping your mattress at least 2 inches above ground on a platform frame with slats no more than 4 inches apart to allow for optimal airflow. This both supports your mattress and discourages growth of mold or mildew caused by moisture buildup & improper airflow. With most mattresses, if you put it directly on the floor, be sure to flip it over each morning to air out.

If your futon has developed any imperfections, rest assured, below are several methods to help level it out.

1.  Press and step on the mattress

Lay the futon mattress on a flat surface, as the floor. Wearing a clean pair of socks, step around on the mattress to work out any high spots. Focus on areas that feel uneven. This method can take about 30 minutes a night, and regular attention can help smooth out any bumps.

2. Roll and compress the mattress

Another option is to roll up the futon mattress from the thicker side toward the thinner side. Once rolled, sit on the mattress, or have a friend sit with you, and gently bounce or apply pressure for a few minutes to help redistribute the filling.

3. Stretch the mattress

You can also try flipping the mattress so you are sleeping on the thicker side. Before settling in for the night, roll your body back and forth across the mattress a few times to help level out the filling and even out the surface.

4. Use a tool

For persistent high spots, consider using a hard object, like a 2x4, to beat out the areas that are uneven. This can help smooth out and level the surface. Maybe you need to get some aggression out?

5. Air it out

To freshen the mattress and/or any other natural fiber items, drape it over a couple of chairs on a warm, dry day to let it air out. This can both rejuvenate the loft and sterilize the cotton & wool fibers of any absorbed moisture.

Cleaning your mattress

Similar to conventional mattresses, futons can not be washed or dry cleaned. Spot clean any spills as quickly as possible with hydrogen peroxide and/or baking soda using an absorbent sponge. The shell of your futon is tufted in order to hold the batting in place and is not meant to be removed or washed. See also, "Air it out" above.
